Borough Yards: Breathing new life into historic London
As we approach the end of the year, it’s great to see progress being made on one of our major jobs in the historic Borough Market area of Southwark, London.
Borough Yards is a £300m project featuring a high specification office structure over a double storey basement, incorporating retail, cinema and leisure usage.
The evolve team is providing structural and civil engineering services on the new build which has retained the south and west façades from the original demolished building. Work will also include the installation of new ground floor slabs and foundations.
Fixing of the reinforcement of the building basement and foundations is currently being carried out, ready for the concrete pour. The reduced dig and temporary works installations are progressing on the deeper elements of the structure, which in parts will be up to 12 metres below ground level. The tower crane foundations are also under construction; they will form part of the permanent structure once the crane itself is no longer required.
The new retail units will be erected under the existing railway arches. Laying of the new complex drainage network and attenuation system has now commenced in preparation for the phased construction of the reinforced ground floor slabs and foundations under these new units. The new drainage network will also pick up the existing railway’s 200-year-old track drainage points which take water away from the railway at each arch pier location. The tricky task of readjusting the existing service trenches to allow for the new service requirements has also begun.
With this fantastic project now taking shape, don’t forget to peek out of the window next time you catch a train in or out of Canon Street to see it for yourself!
