We are thrilled to announce that our work on ‘The Barcode’ at Drake Circus, Plymouth has won the UK Tekla Structural Designer Award 2020.

A judging panel crowned the evolve entry the winner of the technical award and we will now be automatically entered into the Global Tekla Awards, the results of which will be revealed in September.

The competition gave us a chance to showcase the challenging engineering design work involved in the project and to demonstrate how the use of structural analysis software was integral to the successful completion of the building.

The complex structure, which features a 5505-tonne steelwork frame amounting to 32.5km in length, was built on the site of the former Bretonside bus station in Plymouth city centre. The development included the construction of a 12-screen cinema containing the UK’s third largest IMAX stacked above 13 restaurants, a large indoor golf leisure facility, a sky-bar and several levels of car parking, one of which utilised an existing viaduct undercroft.
