Kia Motors

Evolve provided civil and structural engineering design services on a new flagship car showroom for Kia Motors. The original site housed an auctioneer’s warehouse, which was demolished.

Challenge

The new development is located adjacent to the M4 and Great West Road into London. The site was constrained by an existing TFL retaining wall supporting the Great West Road pavement and a Network Rail sheet pile wall retaining the site from the railway and an access ramp to the Big Yellow Self Storage building next door.

The new lower ground floor to the building was also 2m lower than the existing site.

Solution

This building is framed in steel with concrete composite deck floor slabs and building is clad with curtain walling and planar glazing. To negate cold bridging between the internal and external spaces the structure is split at the junction. To facilitate the architectural proposals, several long span cantilevers are incorporated into the building to support the projecting upper storeys and their cladding.

The building has been modeled and designed using CSC Fastrak Building Designer. The analysis model was used as the basis for the Revit model, which was used to produce the production information.

As a result of the extensive site constraints, we were in constant discussions with the relevant parties to ensure they were conversant with the development.

A Giken piling system was designed to enable the reduced dig and facilitate the new lower ground floor.
