Red Lion Square

Red Lion Square is an existing 6-storey reinforced concrete office building, with single storey basement. The client sought to investigate options to refurbish and extend the existing building in addition to how to adapt it for potential change the use to a life sciences laboratory space. The refurbishment includes also an improved high performance façade.

Challenges & Solutions

This change of use comes with significant new requirements for the life sciences environment due to the additional building services to be installed, the need for adaptability and the enhanced vibration performance required to facilitate sensitive research activities/instrumentation.

For both uses, Evolve sought to offer a low embodied carbon solution, which would retain as much of the existing structure as possible.  Significant research was required into the framing and construction of the existing structure to ascertain if the alterations could be achieved within the existing capacity of the foundations, whilst also considering the proposed extensions.

Detailed surveys and analysis of the existing concrete floor structure were carried out to assess the performance under vibration. In addition, Evolve looked at various ways of enhancing the performance of the existing structure to meet ‘best in class’ specifications. This work was complicated as it needed to consider multi-tenancy throughout the building and across floors.
