From a rather imposing Victorian former NHS establishment, to becoming the headquarters of the Royal College of Practitioners (RCGP) this Grade II* listed building has served as an impressive cornerstone of the capital’s health infrastructure for a long time.
So it was with great anticipation that the Evolve engineering team collaborated in major surgery on the building in 2010, designed to fill it with light and make it fit for purpose in the 21st century as the dynamic new RCGP HQ in the heart of London. Following a full structural diagnosis in 2009, Evolve was engaged to undertake extensive refurbishment of the building.
Our planned therapy included carving out room for a two storey auditorium, creating new atria spaces and link bridges, plus an external area. Our engineers oversaw work which included designing plate girder transfer beams, and incorporating fabricated box sections spanning 14m, plus constructing a new link bridge from high spec plate sections and tapering box girders connected together with tapering tee secondary beams, all finished with an etched structural glass floor.
Visitors to the new building, which sits in a prominent position on the Euston Road opposite the Wellcome Foundation, can now take advantage of light-filled meeting rooms, boardrooms, an auditorium and outdoor terrace, as well as overnight accommodation. 30 Euston Square is just minutes from the Euston, St Pancras and King’s Cross terminals, and is also accessed easily via tube and bus, taxi and bicycle.
